About this tool

The common mistake in a sale is adding the discounts together: "20% off, then an extra 10%" looks like 30% but is really 28%, because the second one applies to the already reduced price. This calculator applies them in the right order and shows the real combined rate, and works backwards too when you need the price before the discount.

How to use

  1. 1Choose "apply discount" for the final price, or "find original price" to work backwards.
  2. 2Enter the price.
  3. 3Enter the discount, or several separated by a comma, such as: 20, 10
  4. 4Read the final price, the amount saved and the real combined percentage.

When you need it

  • Knowing the final price before you reach the till.
  • Checking whether an "extra discount" offer is actually worth it.
  • Recovering the original price from a sale tag.
  • Stacking a volume discount on top of a promotional one in a supply contract.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a price after a discount?

Multiply the price by (1 minus the rate). A 25% discount on 400 is 400 × 0.75 = 300, so you save 100.

Is 20% then 10% the same as 30%?

No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the result is 28%. A price of 100 becomes 80, then 72 — not 70. Enter both rates separated by a comma and the real combined figure appears.

How do I find the price before the discount?

Switch to "find original price" and enter the sale price and the rate. A sale price of 300 after 25% off started at 400.
