About this tool

Working out VAT sounds simple until you need to go backwards — from a VAT-inclusive total to the net price — which is where most manual mistakes happen. This calculator does both directions at the standard rates used across the Gulf and the region, and lets you enter any custom rate.

How to use

  1. 1Choose Add VAT if your amount is before tax, or Extract VAT if it already includes tax.
  2. 2Enter the amount.
  3. 3Pick a country rate, or type a custom rate.
  4. 4Read and copy the net amount, the VAT and the total.

When you need it

  • Pricing products and services so the final price includes VAT.
  • Splitting a VAT-inclusive receipt into net amount and tax for bookkeeping.
  • Checking the VAT line on a supplier's invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate VAT from a total that already includes it?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 15%, a total of 1,150 divided by 1.15 gives a net amount of 1,000, so the VAT is 150. Taking 15% of 1,150 directly gives the wrong answer.

What are the VAT rates in the Gulf?

Saudi Arabia 15%, Bahrain 10%, and the UAE and Oman 5%. Qatar and Kuwait have not introduced VAT. Egypt's standard rate is 14% and Jordan's general sales tax is 16%.

Can I rely on these rates for official invoices?

The rates are the standard ones at the time of writing, but governments change them and some goods have reduced or zero rates. Always confirm the current rate for official documents.
