About this tool

Many JSON files, JavaScript bundles and API responses store non-English text as escape sequences, so a simple Arabic word becomes an unreadable string of backslashes and hex codes. This tool turns those sequences back into readable text, and converts text into escapes when a system requires pure ASCII.

How to use

  1. 1Choose Unescape to turn escape sequences into readable text, or Escape for the reverse.
  2. 2Paste the text or escaped string into the input box.
  3. 3When escaping, keep "Only non-ASCII characters" on to leave English letters and numbers untouched.
  4. 4Copy the result.

When you need it

  • Reading Arabic content inside a JSON response that arrives fully escaped.
  • Preparing translation strings for systems that only accept ASCII files.
  • Debugging why text appears as codes instead of letters in a log or database export.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Arabic text shown as \u escape codes?

Some serializers escape every non-ASCII character by default to stay safe with old systems. The data is correct — it is just encoded. Unescaping restores the original letters without any loss.

What about emoji and characters beyond \uFFFF?

They are stored as two escape sequences, called a surrogate pair. The tool produces and reads both halves correctly, and also understands the \u{...} form used in modern JavaScript.

Is this the same as URL encoding?

No. URL encoding uses percent signs (%D9%85) and is meant for web addresses. Unicode escapes use backslash-u and are meant for code and JSON. Use the URL tool for web addresses.
